The Panels and Inverters Homeowners Actually Install

From public installation records of home systems installed in 2023–2025 (Tracking the Sun, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory).

Most-Installed Panel Brands

Share of home systems by panel manufacturer, 2023–2025
Public records
Panel brand Share of home systems Note
Qcells30%The most common brand on US homes, and still growing (31% in 2025).
JA Solar11%Mostly on leased systems: Sunrun's most common panel.
REC8%
SunPower7%Down to 3% in 2025. SunPower filed for bankruptcy in 2024; panel warranties depend on the manufacturer (Maxeon).
LONGi7%One of the world's largest panel makers.
Canadian Solar6%
Silfab4%Manufactures in North America.
Panasonic2%

Panels keep getting better: the median panel installed on homes converted 16.4% of sunlight into electricity in 2015 and 21.3% in 2025. A higher-efficiency panel fits more power on the same roof; it doesn't make each kilowatt cheaper.

Inverter Architectures Compared

Microinverters vs. DC optimizers vs. central string systems
Power Conversion
48% of home systems, 2023–2025

Microinverters (Enphase)

A small inverter under each panel turns its power into household AC.

  • Conversion: At each panel
  • Shade: Low: each panel works on its own
  • Warranty: Usually 25 years
Best for: Roofs with several faces or partial shade.
27% of home systems, 2023–2025

DC Optimizers (SolarEdge)

An optimizer under each panel, with one inverter on the wall.

  • Conversion: At the central inverter
  • Shade: Low: optimizers handle each panel
  • Warranty: Usually 25 years on optimizers, 12 on the inverter
Best for: Roofs with some shade where one central inverter is acceptable.
14% of home systems, 2023–2025 (36% in 2025)

String Inverter (Tesla and others)

Panels wired in series into one inverter. Tesla's is built into Powerwall 3, which is why it went from 4% of new systems in 2023 to 36% in 2025.

  • Conversion: At the central inverter
  • Shade: Higher: a shaded panel can pull down the others
  • Warranty: Often 10 to 12 years; check the model
Best for: Simple roofs and ground mounts with little shade.

Federal Solar Tax Credits in 2026: What Changed

The 30% credit homeowners used to claim when buying a system (Section 25D) ended on December 31, 2025.

Buying a system (cash or loan)

No federal credit for systems installed on or after January 1, 2026. The Section 25D Residential Clean Energy Credit was terminated by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. A quote that still subtracts 30% from the price is out of date.

Leasing or a PPA

The Section 48E credit is claimed by the business that owns the system. Homeowners can benefit from it indirectly through a solar lease or power purchase agreement, available through the end of 2027.

State and utility incentives

Not affected by the federal change. They vary by state and utility, so ask each installer which ones apply to your address.

Frequently Asked Installation Questions

Common questions about solar installation timelines, warranties, and contractor vetting.

Is there still a federal solar tax credit in 2026?

Not for homeowners who buy a system outright. The Section 25D Residential Clean Energy Credit — the 30% credit — was terminated by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and does not apply to systems installed on or after January 1, 2026. What remains is the Section 48E credit, which is claimed by the business that owns the system. Homeowners can still benefit from it indirectly through a solar lease or power purchase agreement (PPA), available through the end of 2027. State and utility incentives are unaffected and vary by location.

What does "Tier-1" mean for solar panels?

Tier 1 is a list kept by BloombergNEF of panel makers whose products have been used in large bank-financed projects. It measures a manufacturer's financial track record, not the quality or efficiency of a particular panel, so treat it as one data point. What matters more for a home: the panel's efficiency, its output warranty, and whether the manufacturer will still be around to honor it. In public installation records, the median panel installed on homes in 2025 converted 21.3% of sunlight into electricity.

Are microinverters better than a string inverter with optimizers?

Both handle shade well, because each panel works on its own instead of dragging down the rest. With microinverters such as Enphase, there is a small inverter under every panel, so one failure takes out one panel, and the warranty is usually 25 years. With SolarEdge, an optimizer sits under each panel and one central inverter on the wall does the conversion; it is often a little cheaper, but if that inverter fails the whole system stops, and its standard warranty is shorter, typically 12 years. Both meet rapid shutdown rules. Compare the two in the quotes you get rather than choosing on equipment alone.

How long does a professional solar installation take?

The work on the roof usually takes one to three days. The whole process, from the site survey through design, permits, inspection and the utility's permission to turn the system on, often takes one to three months, and longer where permit offices or utilities are backed up. Ask the installer for an estimated timeline in writing.

Does solar installation damage my roof or void the roof warranty?

A properly installed system shouldn't: each mount goes into a rafter and is sealed with a metal or molded flashing, not just caulk. Leaks happen when that step is skipped or done badly. Before signing, ask how long the installer covers leaks at the mounts, and check your roofing warranty, since some roofers require their approval or a certified installer for work on the roof. If the roof is near the end of its life, replace it first: removing and reinstalling the panels later costs extra.
