What to Know Before Going Solar in Gaithersburg
Local electricity costs and the current federal incentive picture — the two numbers that decide whether solar pays off here.
Electricity costs in Maryland
21.84¢ / kWh
Residential rates in Maryland run 25% above the U.S. average. Higher grid rates shorten the payback period on a solar system, because every kWh you self-generate offsets a more expensive one.

Federal tax credit status — 2026
The 30% federal solar tax credit for homeowners (Section 25D) ended on December 31, 2025. Systems installed from January 1, 2026 onward are not eligible for it. Be cautious with any contractor still quoting that credit for a 2026 installation.
What remains is the 48E credit, claimed by the company that owns the system. Homeowners can still benefit from it indirectly through a lease or PPA (third-party ownership), available through the end of 2027.
